A little hug for Nan, from across the sea

My Nan moved into a care home in Cornwall and I'm all the way up in Bristol — I missed being able to pop round for a cup of tea. I sent her the avocado Pocket Hug with a note that said 'you're the good kind, Nan'. She rang me crying, said she carries it in her dressing-gown pocket every day. It's the smallest thing, but it brought us back into the same room.

Thank You

A thank you that landed before the words could

I never properly thanked Mr. Hughes before he retired. I posted the turtle with a card: 'you taught me to keep going'. He emailed back the same afternoon to say it was the nicest thing he'd received in thirty years of teaching. Better late than never — and the turtle got there before I did.

The gift my mum didn't know she needed

I just wanted to make Mum smile on her birthday. She opened the envelope, held the little avocado in her palm and immediately welled up. 'It's like you're here,' she said. It now lives on her bedside table. I'll be sending more for every occasion I can't make it home for.

Mother's Day, the right side of the country

Mum's been a carer for Dad this year and I could tell she was running on empty. The bee arrived through the letterbox on Mother's Day morning — 'bee-cause you're my world, Mum'. She sent me a photo of it on her kitchen windowsill next to her morning cuppa. We've never been closer.
